My Two Grannies tells the story of a little girl named Alvina and her relationship with her two grandmothers. Each grandmother had different childhood experiences and enjoys doing different things with Alvina. Alvina loves them both very much. When her parents go away on vacation and both grandmothers come to stay, Alvina is asked to choose between activities proposed by each grandmother. Eventually they settle into a routine of alternating days during which each grandmother gets to propose the things that she likes best, and instead of fighting they become closer as a family.

This story is a lovely way to introduce the ideas of family histories. It may prompt the children to ask family members about their own childhoods. Some children may want to write stories about their own family members. It may also be a great segue into a conversation about how we handle disagreements.
